Story is here.

I really think being burned to death is the worst way to go.

This instantly rememinded me of Matthew Shepard. He was tied to a fence, pistol whipped, mutilated before being left to die by two guys that agreed to drive him home. He was found 18 hours later barely alive by a man that thought he was a scarecrow. He was put on life support and died days later after doctors determined his injuries were inoperable. Westboro Baptist Church protested his funeral with signs like: "No Tears for Queers" and "Fag Matt in Hell.". Godhatesfags.com (owned by WBC and recently shut down by Anonymous back in February) also featured a banner with "days Matthew Shepard has been burning in hell' with a counter.  Here's the Wiki link if you want the whole story:

I don't hate many people, but Westboro Baptist is at the top of my list of most hated motherfuckers.

I think we can all fucking hate them. It's sick what they're doing. There's a difference between freedom of speech and what they're doing. It's ok to not like a group, it's just the way the world works. But they're a bunch of douchebags.

I hope the German satellite hitting earth hits their HQ.

I think drowning's worse than burning. Sure for a few seconds you're in as much pain as the human nervous system can possibly support but once those nerve endings melt, you can't feel a thing.

Thing to remember about Westboro is, freedom of speech is a law, not a virtue. All it means is the Government can't stop you from speaking your opinion. It doesn't mean anyone else has to tolerate you.
You could probably sue them for emotional distress and win pretty easily.

The thing is, somebody did sue because of the emotional stress they caused. And after that, it was reversed, the money was taken away, all because they ruled Westboro's protest as constitutionally protected speech.

Westboro is eating up the fact that they can do this shit and no one can do anything but spread their message.

I always wish they'd describe the death, injuries, and state of the corpse more in these articles.

well that is interesting. If he never actually saw the signs, though, I can see how he could have lost.

Do they actually have a message? All I'm getting from their publicity is that they want to spread the most inflammatory shit possible.

There's a neat documentary on them here. It's one of my all time favorite docs, Louis Theroux is a good guy.

And yeah, spreading controversial shit around is pretty much their thing.

edit: hurrrrrrrrr

if you want a good history of Fred Phelps, the Non-Prophets Radio podcast has a few episodes that talk about him and WBC. (they come up alot, actually.)

here's an interview with one of Fred's sons that turned atheist and left the church.
