EDIT: (I'm listening to the show as we speak) When you turn eighteen, you actually can drop out of high school by yourself. My brother has a mild form of autism and decided he didn't want to go to school anymore and dropped out when he turned eighteen with six months of his senior year left to go. He's such a fucking dumb shit.
Though not exactly related to the show, from my understanding, it's never actually legal for a teacher to confiscate things like cellphones or toys in class no matter what age you are, and if you tell them no when they ask you to hand over something of yours, they can't really do anything.
On the topic of daughters being killed in China, it's not exactly legal for them to murder their daughters, but it's a very common practice to abort female babies or give them up for adoption, which is why they have such an uneven gender ratio.
